Interview with Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., shortlisted for the Industry Choice Awards

Thank you Nakul Duggal for taking the time to answer a few questions. 


Nakul Duggal serves as senior vice president of product management for Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., where he is responsible for the automotive and M2M portfolio, which includes chipset product strategy, vertical-specific requirements, and ecosystem partnerships.

Duggal joined Qualcomm in 1995 as an engineer focused on the company’s commercial base station and infrastructure business. Subsequent successes in both engineering and project lead roles elevated Duggal to various management positions within Qualcomm’s Engineering Services Group, where he focused on the development and commercialization of CDMA and UMTS technologies. While in ESG, Duggal led the Open Market Handset (OMH) initiative, an industry wide effort to expand CDMA device distribution into the open market.

Prior to joining Qualcomm, Duggal was a product engineer at Tata Telecom in India, where he was responsible for product management and systems engineering for the company’s wire-line switching systems. Duggal holds a BSEE degree from M.S. University, India and a master’s degree in business administration from the University of California, Los Angeles, Anderson School of Management.

Qualcomm’s 3rd generation automotive cockpit platforms were the first-announced high-compute, scalable and AI-based platforms for digital cockpits worldwide -- delivering transformative experiences for drivers and passengers alike. The company’s integrated automotive platforms drive leadership and growth across telematics, infotainment and in-car connectivity, with an order pipeline of more than $7+ billion. What’s more, all major global automakers currently use the company’s broad portfolio of automotive solutions across telematics, infotainment and connectivity, and continue to work alongside Qualcomm Technologies to deliver safe, robust, and efficient automotive solutions.

Additionally, Qualcomm has been a valued partner in delivering on the promise of C-V2X connectivity. The company partnered with many of the world’s leading automotive and technologies companies to showcase the benefits and maturity of the technology, most recently with Audi of America and the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDoT) for an initial C-V2X deployment on Virginia roadways starting in Q3 2020 to showcase how C-V2C technology can be used to improve road safety in two primary areas: work zone warnings and signal phase as well as timing (SpaT) from a traffic signal on arterial roadways. V2X communication and its solutions allow for the exchange of information between vehicles and network infrastructure, improving road safety, increasing efficient traffic flows, and providing additional communications and information services.

Looking to the future of mobility, the Qualcomm Snapdragon Ride Platform (unveiled at CES 2020), is a scalable and fully customizable automated driving platform designed to give automotive suppliers and OEMs the flexibility to deploy the safety, convenience, and autonomous driving features valued today with the ability to scale for the future. The unique combination of Snapdragon Ride SoCs, accelerator, and autonomous stack offers automakers a customizable solution designed to support three industry segments of autonomous systems: L1/L2 Active Safety ADAS; L2+ Convenience ADAS for vehicles featuring Automated Highway Driving, Self-Parking, and Urban Driving in Stop-and-Go traffic; and L4/L5 Fully Autonomous Driving for autonomous urban driving, robo-taxis and robo-logistics.

Finally, Qualcomm’s expertise in mobile communication is a significant driver of connected car technology, such as 5G communication systems begin to roll out. As vehicles become more technologically complex, Qualcomm is maximizing software and hardware performance with system on chip (SoC) solutions, which minimize power draw -- ultimately meeting the needs of automakers with next-generation products for a new age of mobility.
